Once he gets the ball in the open field, defenders are a bit hesitant in trying to take down the 6-5 250-pound Oklahoman, as he’s known to bowl over defensive backs and linebackers.

The Giants took Shockey with the 14th pick in the 2002 draft at a time when it was unheard of to select a tight end that high. Shockey did not disappoint in his rookie season, netting 894 yards through the air. In 83 career games, the former Miami Hurricane has amassed 4228 yards receiving and 27 touchdowns. There’s no doubt that his statistics and personality will sell New Orleans Saints tickets.

This deal works out well for the Giants as well. Shockey had expressed his displeasure with the organization and even had a shouting match with the team’s general manager. The disgruntled tight end wanted to be used more as a receiver than a blocker. He should get that chance in New Orleans. The Giants made their incredible Super Bowl run last season with Shockey watching from the sidelines with an injury. Rookie Kevin Boss stepped it up in the playoffs and made Shockey seem less-valuable to the club. The Giants received ample compensation for the tight end and should be just fine.

The Saints could really be a team to look out for this season. Shockey adds another weapon to an already dangerous offense and the team has made some drastic improvements on defense as well. Shockey is the second playmaker that the club has wrestled away from a New York team this offseason. The Saints acquired linebacker Jonathan Vilma, a remarkable talent stuck in an ill-fitting defensive scheme, from the New York Jets. The team also drafted USC defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis in an attempt to sure up their interior rush defense.
